58 teams from all over the world have entered the 2016 Etchells World Championship, hosted by the Royal London Yacht Club. Boasting at least thirteen current and past Etchells World Champions, as well as Olympic medallist, America's Cup sailors, and world champions from numerous sailing classes. Twenty teams are from Great Britain and a dozen each from Australia and the United States of America. Four entries are from Hong Kong and as far afield as: Bermuda, Ireland, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy Regatta, organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron, attracted one of the largest fleets of Etchells seen in the Solent for many years. Bolstered by the forthcoming 2016 Etchells World Championship, to be held in the Solent 31 August – 10 September. 28 teams from Australia, Great Britain, Hong Kong and the United States of America took part.

Probably the most competitive and hotly contested keel boat class in the Solent, the Cowes Etchells fleet is tuning up for the 2016 Etchells Worlds hosted the Royal London Yacht Club. The April Training Regatta with coaching attracted 19 teams hosted by the Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club (CCYC) and supported by Doyle Sails One Design guru, Jud Smith, who provided high level on the water coaching.

The Cowes Etchells Fleet are delighted to announce that Zhik have agreed to be exclusive clothing sponsor for the 2016 Etchells World Championship in Cowes.This compliments Zhik’s appointment as Official Technical Clothing Partner to the British Olympic Sailing Team and the Official Supplier to the Australian Olympic Team.

After some fierce competition, three Etchells Youth Teams who have won a fully funded Etchells for a magnificent season of Etchells racing in the Solent with the Royal London Etchells Youth Academy. In the past four years, over 160 highly talented young sailors of have sailed in the Cowes Etchells Fleet, some going on to win Youth Match Racing Championships at National, European and World level and recently Bleddyn Mon has joined the Ben Ainsley America Cup’s team. A significant number of youth sailors have experienced top level Etchells racing in Cowes, as well as travelling to Newport, USA, Hong Kong, Miami, Italy and Australia.

Red Funnel operating car ferries and passenger Red Jet services, between the mainland and the Isle of Wight, have agreed to partner the 2016 Etchells World Championship in Cowes. Red Funnel is providing a superb range of benefits aimed at assisting competitors and spectators for the Etchells World Championship, hosted by the Royal London Yacht Club in Cowes, 5th – 12th September 2016.

Despite a fire at a boatyard in West Cowes on the Isle of Wight, which destroyed 17 Etchells keelboats. David Franks, the Cowes Etchells fleet captain, reports that the class had rallied after the incident and that the Etchells World Championship, to be held in Cowes this summer, will be unaffected and is set for an impressive turnout of world class sailors from all over the world.

Eddie Warden Owen, Ossie Stewart and Adrian Friend have bought an Etchells to campaign for the 2016 World Championships which will be held in the Solent in September. Eddie, an ex professional sailor and coach to Americas Cup teams is better known for his offshore racing exploits winning the Admirals Cup in the 90’s with British and Italian teams. He is now Chief Executive of the London based Royal Ocean Racing Club who has moved their Race Office to Cowes following the successful merger with the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in Cowes. The combined club with over 4000 members is the largest UK yacht club with a third of its members based overseas.

Welcome to the 2016 Etchells Worlds Cowes Cowes has an unsurpassed heritage in racing yachts and indeed the world’s most famous yacht race, the America’s Cup, was first raced from Cowes around the Isle of Wight in 1851.

(Credit: Cowes Harbour Commission) Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) is delighted with the news that Governors of the International Etchells Class Association have approved Cowes as the venue for the 2016 Etchells World Championship. Racing will take place from 5th to 10th September 2016, organised by the Royal London Yacht Club, and up to 100 boats will be berthed at CHC’s Shepards Wharf Marina where there is an established Etchells dry sailing fleet.
